Environmental catalysers of economic distress-induced self-harm
Lauko, Adam ; Šlegerová, Lenka (advisor) ; Votápková, Jana (referee)
This thesis examines the relationship between the unemployment rates and suicide rates in Czech and Slovak districts from 2002 to 2020 by fixed effects model. The thesis found a positive link between the male suicide rate and the unemployment rate. For the female suicide rate, the link was insignificant. It was found that the moderating effect of built-up areas was estimated as negative, while the effect of population density was positive. These findings were only partially according to the literature, as we expected that both effects will be negative. The moderating effects of greenery and divorce rate were estimated as insignificant. However, the validity of these findings is questionable, as the goodness of fit measures are poor and were increased only after increasing the level of aggregation from NUTS4 to NUTS3
Policy of legally held firearms in the Czech Republic.
Chrastil, Pavel ; Knobloch, František (advisor) ; Brázová, Věra - Karin (referee)
The aim of this dissertation is to present the issue of legal possession of firearms in the Czech Republic and identify problematic areas within this topic. Dissertation examines whether the current policy of legal possession of firearms is adequate, considering all consequences that this possession brings. Considerable attention is paid to this policy tools and unintended consequences. Dissertation uses the method of desk- research. Within its boundaries content analysis and comparison of available data and documents is made. In the empirical part semi-standardized questionnaire with experts selected from specific areas was conducted as well as a questionnaire survey with license applicants and holders. The main bodies of theory are cultural theory of risk and other heuristics describing distorted risk perception, as well as ethnic security dilemma, which is relevant considering the current threats. Particular empirical support was found, which suggests misperception of risks, when insignificant risks -as driving force for firearms acquisition - are overrated. Firearms holders and applicant are therefore influenced by unfounded fear. Dissertation shows new perspective on the impact of weapons in dealing with emergencies and coexistence with migrants. Examined group of firearms license holders and...
The Effect of Temperature on Suicide: A Meta-Analysis
Bartušek, Daniel ; Havránková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Bajzík, Josef (referee)
In this thesis I investigate the empirical evidence on the relationship between temperature and suicide rates. The previous survey on the relationship sug- gested that a 1řC increase in temperature is associated with a 1% increase in suicide risk. An estimate of this magnitude would play a significant role in the computation of the social cost of carbon, a concept used to set climate-related regulations by policymakers around the world. I challenge this conclusion using novel, state-of-the-art meta-analysis methods. By expanding the dataset and correcting for publication bias I show that the effect of temperature on suicide rates is three times less than previously suggested, deeming the relationship economically insignificant. Moreover, I did not find any robust evidence for a specific study design that would systematically influence the magnitude of the estimated effect quantifying this relationship. Keywords temperature, weather, climate, suicide, suicidality Title Effect of Temperature on Suicide - Meta Analysis 1

External causes of death - regional differences and context in districts of CZ
Spilková, Zuzana ; Daňková, Šárka (advisor) ; Mazouch, Petr (referee)
This diploma thesis analyzes mortality from external causes in the region of CZ between 2014 and 2018. The main focus is on external causes of death as a group, suicide rates, and mortality from traffic accidents. Another aim of this thesis is, besides the description of mortality from external causes, to identify regional correlation and differences in mortality from external causes and selected causes of death (suicides and traffic accidents). This study uses correlation, factor, and cluster analysis. Because of the low numbers of deaths in the case of women (in all dependent variables), the study analyzes mortality from both sexes together. Based on created factors clusters of regions are developed. Results show the difference between regions in CZ in mortality external causes. Regions also vary in suicide mortality rates and traffic accident mortality rates. Independent variables that correlate with mortality from external causes vary for external causes as a group, for suicides, and for mortality from traffic accidents. Keywords: external causes of death, suicides, traffic accidents, factor analysis, cluster analysis

This thesis analyzes suicide in 47 countries (36 European, 7 Asian, 1 African and Canada, Australia and New Zealand). It has been found that eastern European countries have the highest suicide mortality rates. At the same time, these countries recorded the most significant decline in these rates between 2000-2015. In the long term, the lowest suicide rates are characterized by the countries of southern Europe. The hypothesis of male mortality excess was confirmed in all analyzed countries. This thesis also confirmed the assumption that the intensity of suicide mortality rate increases in direct proportion to age in all analyzed countries (except for Finnish, Norwegian, Canadian and Australian women). Vondrášek, Martin ; Burcin, Boris (advisor) ; Hulíková Tesárková, Klára (referee)
Development of regional variations in suicide mortality in the Czech Republic in the period 1994-2013 Abstract The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to identify the development of regional variations in suicide mortality in the Czech Republic in the period 1994-2013. In view of the fact that the level of suicide mortality is different between genders, was the analysis carried out individually for each sex. The level of suicide mortality was researched through age-standardized suicide mortality rates, index of masculinity of suicides and rate of selfmurderers who chose hanging, strangulation or asphyxiation. These indicators enabled a regional comparison, which total results indicate the decrease of the age-standardized suicide mortality in the Czech Republic against the level in the second half of the nineties. However, it increased in some particular regions. Keywords: Czech Republic, mortality, suicides, suicide methods, suicidial tendence, regional analysis
